Psychotherapy is sometimes referred to as "the talking cure", however, it involves much more than simply talking.
Firstly it provides a safe and confidential environment in which the client can freely discuss their emotional or psychological problems, without fear of judgement or prejudice.
During a psychotherapy session, the client can be assured of empathy, understanding and compassion. This in itself is can be very beneficial, but it is only the beginning.
Psychotherapy utilises many techniques to help the client deal with and overcome unwanted thoughts, feelings and behaviours, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Neuro-lingistic Programming (NLP), transactional analysis and sex therapy - to name but a few.
The aim of Psychotherapy is to empower the client with the insight and resources with which to alter their negative or destructive thought patterns and behaviour, leaving them more in control of their life and emotions.
Psychotherapy can teach us how to be more in touch with our emotions and who we really are, which in turn enables us to live our lives to their full potential, free from the emotional baggage and hurtful legacies from the past.
It can help us to build self-esteem, lay the painful ghosts of past relationships to rest, break the cycle of self- destructive behaviour and provide us with the tools to experience life in a more enriching and fulfilling way.
